Billabong Pro Teahupoo is an ASP World Tour professional surf competition held annually in Teahupo’o, a village on the southwestern coast of the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia.
The reef is located in Teahupo’o and is a rewarding and important place for any enthusiastic surfer.
The event in question was founded in 1999 and has since been recognized as one of the heaviest and most dangerous ocean competitions in the world.
That’s because the waves here, which can easily exceed 15 meters, are known to be the only ones that break below sea level.
Plus, in addition to a shallow shoreline, they can cause serious injury and even death.
Lovers of the table also face the fury of the sea, venturing into reckless “tube-riding”; in a nutshell, the storm surges meet the coral reef and form waves which, folding in on themselves, turn into real tubes. It is only when these water pipes are created, that the surf masters go through them, just as they are crashing down hard on themselves.
Consequently, only highly experienced surfers in optimal physical condition are allowed to attempt feats of this kind.
The competition is divided into four parts and is based on an elimination process that will lead to the final nomination of the winner.
It’s about performances that require great skill and preparation, certainly not suitable for everyone, but only for those who train hard all year and tenaciously manage to challenge the waves as if it were a real battle.
Passion in these cases is not enough: here what counts is talent and a particular determination out of the ordinary, which pushes these champions not to be afraid, to be contemptuous of danger and to react promptly and cold-bloodedly to any unexpected events that arise along their path.
