The South Coast generally refers to the narrow coastal belt from Sydney and Wollongon to the border with Victoria. It is actually divided into 3 sub-regions. Shoalhaven, the Eurododalla Nature Coast and the Sapphire Coast. Mainly populated and visited by the inhabitants of both Sydney and Canberra, it is a majestic coastline with natural bays, white sand and a blanket of tropical steppes. Besides Sydney, It is the most populated tourist destination in New South Wales, and in the last few years many people have moved to this area. Its waters are famous for its fish, dolphins and migrating whales, but also for its unique surf with its many coral reefs, points and beachbreaks, which offers Sydney surfers a great relief valve for small weekend trips. The main reason for hanging around Jervis Bay and Booderee National Park is to surf the renowned Black Rock reefbreaks (also known as Aussi Pipe). This place is “unofficially” home of local surfing, so it is possible to see with your own eyes phenomena of localism (especially on crowded days with South swells, North-East breezes and mid tide). Coneeley’s Reef is an a-frame peak with South and South-East swells and offshore winds. This spot overlooks the Swan Lake. All surfers will find great waves at Bendalong Beach , which even if it’s crowded, it’s characterized by continous peaks that give barrels from North-East and South-East to all types of tides. A long walk or row will take you to Green Island where long, soft waves are formed with medium to large swells from North-East and South, which are wonderful for longboarders. These slow waves are one of the rare sea state during the summer with North-East winds: that’s because it’s always crowded.
Mollymook offers many spikes, usually with fast waves. Locals respect Reef Golf Course . The bigger it is, the better it is… but maybe you have to take a great row when an 8-10ft wave hits the reef. Bonnie sends unforgettable right-hand waves to the open ocean and the occasional left-hand ones, which are for real surfers only. Near Bonnie, there is Rennies Beach which offers constancy on the right side of the reefbreak. Generally, with North-East and East swell it’s better to go surfing towards Burriel Lake in Dolphin Point, where you could find some excellent left-hand tube waves. Crampton Island is surrounded by a coral reef called Dum Dums that delivers fast tube waves when North-East and South-East swells combine with the right tide. Guillotines has a breathtaking take-off overlooking the reef; the wave gets faster and faster before becoming a closeout. Not so far there is Bawley Point, with its short right-handed but extremely technical waves. When the wave will be around 16ft, giant tube waves will be formed, obviously suitable only for expert surfers. It is already quite difficult to ride a 6ft wave. Drive to Depot Beach for a lonely peak protected from the South wind. This is a beautiful area with many reefs and beaches to explore. North Durras has large reefs in front of the lake where you can enjoy wonderful left-hand and right-hand waves: be careful to the currents.

Characterized by both South-East and North-East waves, the south coast works steadily, even if perfect conditions are rare. Most of summer waves are generated by the North-East and South-East winds. The groundswells from South and SouthEast, generated by the depression of the Tasman Sea, are the most powerful and safest swells for surfing in this area from April to September.
South waves are rare but excellent. There are 2-5ft waves every day, sometimes growing to 6.5-8 ft. Periods with no waves are very short, and most often occur in winter. Prevailing winds from South-West are the best in Winter, while in the summer there are mostly offshore waves, expecially during the morning before the North-East sea breeze picks up. Many beachbreaks and reefbreaks better work with rising tides, even if the tide is low.
How to get there : All countries except New Zealand require a valid visa. Sydney Airport is served by the most important international and domestic airlines. Uludulla is 220km south of Sydney, you need to drive for 3 hours on Highway 1. It is 200km from Canberra airport.
Getting around: The easier way to getting around is to rent a car. There are Hertz and Europcar at the airport, check their price (from USD260 per week). Australia enjoys the most affordable gasoline prices today. The Prince Highway is the main national road asset running along the South-East coast of Australia.
Accommodation and food: Wide variety of motels, guesthouses, cabins and tent pitches. Book in advance for one night at Booderee Nat Park camping($ 10 per night). South Coast Travelers Rest in Ulladulla ($ 20/ $ 45 per double) is the best backpacker. There is also the Huskisson Beach Tourist Resort in Jervis Bay where you can sleep in cabins (maximum of 5 persons) or the legendary Don’s in Green Island (from $50 per double). You can also go in every Caravan Park, including Sussex and Mollymook.
Climate : Ulladulla has a temperate climate characterized by the sea breeze. Temperatures range from 8 to 22 ° C in winter and from 14 to 26 ° C in summer. During the summer (from November to March) the sun is really strong, so you need to protect yourself from the sun UV rays. In winter is necessary a 3/2 mm wetsuit and boots. The rest of the year a short wetsuit is enough.
Nature and Culture : The South Coast is a place where nature reigns supreme. Kangaroo Valley, Ettrema Wilderness, Budawang Range and Morton National Park are some of the main historical places which worth to be visited. You have also to visit the arid and wild area that goes from Pretty Beach to Durras. Remember, don’t miss the Easter ceremony in Ulludulla.
Dangers and annoyances : Crowds are not a problem, but people need to be very respectful with the locals. Many spots are for the most expert surfers, so don’t overestimate your skills. Shark attacks, tidal currents, reef cuts and sea urchins are the most dangerous things.
Tips : There are a lot of shops in Ulladulla (Raddidge Surf Design, Swift Stix, Hotmix Surfboards, Southern Man, Totally Board etc). Beginners can take surf lessons at Ulladulla Surf School. Nowra is the largest city on the South Coast of New South Wales.
