CREA IL TUO VIAGGIOThis secluded area of Brazil is considered as the most relaxing in the whole country. Far from the hustle and bustle of big cities (and their crime), Ceara offers a lot to its visitors: palm-fringed beaches backed by sand dunes, sun, hot water and even better wind conditions than the east coast. From Mundao, just a few miles away there is the small town of Baleia. This spot works both at high and low tide, but perhaps the best condition is with low tide: the seafloor becomes rather shallow for 150m(0,1mi), and even little swell creates easy and funny waves useful to learn to surf. Driving along the CE 168, you get to Lagoa Mato, which is not really a spot, but it can be windsurfed in the windward half of the lagoon. Icarai de Amontada is accessible via the state road that threads inland, but it is easier to reach it by 4×4 straight along the beach from Baleia. The small village is slowly developing (at the moment there are 4 or 5 ‘pousadas’ to stay at) and here there is also the “Clube dos Ventos” center; here the water is flat in the bay while there are surfable waves off the headland. Moitas is a rustic fishing village overlooking the Rio Arcatiacu. The river has built up sandbar from sediments in its estuary, which submerge at high tide, creating a spot with flat water and strong wind. Alternatively, you can go surfing the waves right in front of the village. From Moitas it is best to drive back towards Icarai and then follow the state highway to Praia do Torroes. The road through the mangrove forests has to be done only with a 4×4 and a local guide, during the dry season. The Rio Arcati-Mirim estuary offers flat water and the classic Atlantic chop further out. The road north-west is very good, so Praia do Torroes is a popular alternative to Praia da Barra, since at low tide the shipping channel between the mainland and the 5km long sandbar of “Ilha Grande” shrinks to about 30m and very strong tidal currents form in the channel.
At the moment there are only a few posadas to sleep in and a few places to eat but some foreign investors have appreciated the potential of this area, which will develop soon. The low tide alternative is Praia do Farol, located in the estuary of the nearby river, where there is always enough water to navigate. A similar spot, with flat water and downwind wind, is Espraiado, which is only reliable from September to February, before the rains begin ruining the sandbars. The spot is located in front of the Mangrove forest and is surrounded by a magical atmosphere, but nowadays, there is no infrastructure. Follow the coast via Praia do Farol, or take the “Juritianha” exit off the highway to arrive at Praia do Apoeiras, a beach frequented by the locals of Acarau. The bay of Prea extends over 20km from Barrinha to Jericoacoara. Barrinha is a spot where the water is very shallow (over 200m of water to the knee), but the hotspot of the region is undoubtedly Preà. It is possible to sail on both sides of the rocks of “Pedra Baleia” or in any case it is you can start from here for 15 km downwinder into the sunset. Kitesurfers must steer clear of the point at Jericoacoara, as this wave is reserved for windsurfers. Jeri is a magical place without any paved roads, built right into the sand in the middle of the national park. Kitesurfers usually downwind to the famous dune where everyone gathers for sunset. The wind is usually offshore here and turns cross-shore further west, so kitesurfing schools usually go to Mangue Secco for kite lessons. Both Guriu and Camocin offer super flat water and they are both located in the 2 sides of the Rio Coreau river delta.

Notes
In the north-west of Ceara, the reliability of the wind is something incredible. Windsurfers greatly appreciate the sudden increase in wind in the area north of Fleixeiras, caused by the sand dune belt that encourage the acceleration of the thermal wind from the Southeast. Usually the wind is 24 knots in Preà. Most of the time it starts blowing from 20-22 knots in the morning, and then reaches 25-28 knots between 1 and 3 in the afternoon; Jeri’s point can easily exceed 30 knots. The wind usually decreases in the late afternoon and it stays around 15 knots during the night. Everything starts the same way the following morning. This is the rule that applies from mid-June until the first days of February. From February until the end of May (which is the rainy season), the wind is weaker and less reliable. This area offers relaxing sessions for both freeride and freestyle. It is also possible to find days with waves up to 8ft when the wind increases in intensity or when the winter groundswells arrive (from October to February). The tide changes a lot during the day and the maximum difference in altitude is 10ft, so it is very important to have good timing when you want to go surfing the flat water spots for freestyle.
How to get there: To reach Fortaleza it takes about 8 hours by plane from Europe. From there it is about another 300 km to reach Preà and Jeri, which is about another 3-4 hours drive. Reaching Jeri is certainly easier if you have a little knowledge of the place, and it is more comfortable if you have a 4WD. You can also reach this place via 6 hours by bus for a cost of about € 20 or with a 50-minute helicopter for a cost of € 500 per person.
Getting around: To reach the beaches along the coast you need a 4WD (they can be rented for about € 100 per day). Normal cars are certainly cheaper to rent (€ 25 per day) but they only are useful on the side south of Barrinha. Around Preà it is best to take the local shuttles that will take you wherever you want.
Accommodation and food : The fishing villages along the coast offer sleeping places for just € 15 per person per night, and here you will also find some delicious fresh fish to eat. To stay in Jeri you have to book in advance as the village is small and places are limited. Here you will also find several restaurants offering both local food and international cuisine (from sushi to steaks). In addition to the “caipirinha” also try the “acai smoothie”. Preà is certainly more exclusive and calm than yesterday.
Climate: The climate is equatorial, so temperatures are around 30 ° C throughout the year (with small drops only between the end of February and the end of May). From the end of May the rainy days begin to arrive, bringing some clouds alternating with the sun. The steady wind makes the strong heat bearable at all hours of the day. Remember to wear sunscreen every day to avoid sunstroke.
Dangers and annoyances: Life is all on the beach. Both Jeri and Preà are famous for having almost zero crime rates; life is extremely relaxed, far removed from the lifestyle of the big cities.
Tips: By now the telephone line is widespread throughout Jeri and moreover many posadas offer free wifi. It is recommended to withdraw the necessary money for the holiday in Fortaleza since the closest ATM is in Jijoca. Outside of Jeri, restaurants and guesthouses do not accept credit cards.
